About Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is a university that specializes in aeronautics and aviation programs. Founded in 1927 as the Embry-Riddle Company, it opened at a small airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The company opened a small school the following year called the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation, which offered flying classes and aircraft maintenance courses. This school would close in 1930 and open again in 1939 in Miami, Florida. The school partnered with the University of Miami to offer pilot classes for students. John F. Kennedy even took classes from the school when working on his pilot’s license. The university would later split off on its own to form Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, also known as Embry-Riddle and ERAU today.

The university system now consists of three campuses. There are two physical campuses in Florida and Arizona and a third virtual campus that features online classes. Enrollment across those campuses includes more than 31,000 students today, though the Daytona Beach campus is the oldest. The university opened that campus in 1965 and opened the Arizona campus in 1978. Both physical locations offer flight and drone training and provide the necessary equipment to students. ERAU now ranks as one of the best colleges in the south, according to Washington Monthly.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Accreditation Details

Embry-Riddle has regional accreditation for its Florida campus from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). This accreditation also applies to its Arizona campus and all the programs offered online. All of the aviation programs offered by the university have accreditation as do its programs in engineering and business. The project management and emergency services programs that are only offered online also have program accreditation.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Application Requirements

ERAU charges a $50 application fee and asks that students submit some information through the mail after using the online application. Incoming undergrads must provide either an official high school transcript or a GED score. They can also provide some optional information, including an ACT/SAT score, which is one of the factors that the university uses when awarding scholarships. The application has an optional admissions essay that helps students explain why they chose ERAU and how the university will help them reach their goals. Other optional information and documents can include a resume and letters of recommendation. Some programs require a copy of the student’s valid pilot’s license too.

The university charges the same $50 application fee of graduate students. Those students can supply several documents online, including their letters of recommendation and resume. Students must write a statement of objectives to outline all the goals they have in one of the university’s graduate programs. They will also need to provide official transcripts to show the university their grades and to prove that they completed a bachelor’s degree program. Some of the graduate and doctoral programs will ask for a GRE or GMAT score and require a score within the 50% percentile on either test.

Tuition and Financial Aid

ERAU offers a 5% discount for Florida residents that reduces their costs to $35,242 per year for full-time enrollment including fees. The cost for undergrads who are not Florida residents is $37,018 per year. Undergrads pay an average of $11,746 each year for room and board too. Graduate students pay either $1,476 per credit hour for part-time enrollment or $19,156 per year for full-time enrollment. Their room and board costs are the same as the costs that undergrads pay. Online students pay $413 to $1,163 per credit hour for the undergraduate and advanced classes they take. The university drops this cost to $250 per credit hour for military students. While its doctoral programs still cost the same, ERAU does offer a discount for military students taking graduate classes.

With multiple jobs available on its campuses, ERAU can help students find positions that work with their career and academic goals. Students can only apply for jobs that are part of the work-study program if they submit the FAFSA and get approval for that program. The FAFSA also lets students qualify for government loan programs and get loans for their parents. They can get one or more grants also. The ERNIE online system designed by the university helps students apply for and get one or more of the scholarships it offers too. Financial aid is available from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University for students enrolled in any degree program.
