In 1909, the Cherokee Nation Female Seminary became a public education institution when it was purchased by the Oklahoma legislature and renamed the Oklahoma State Normal School. The name was changed to Northeastern State University in 1939, and today the school is the fourth-largest institution of higher education in Oklahoma.

NSU consists of three brick-and-mortar campuses as well as an online learning system. Students can choose from over 60 majors and 58 undergraduate and 24 graduate degree programs.
