About the University of Wyoming

The University of Wyoming is a major public university in Laramie, Wyoming also known as UW. Established in 1886 as a way to keep up with the academic needs of the new students moving west, it opened for classes four years before Wyoming became an American state. When Wyoming did become a state, its official charter included information and details relating to this school. Princeton Review ranks the best colleges in the nation every year and included UW within the top 373 schools on that list.

Students and locals have access to several museums on the UW campus, including the American Heritage Center and the University of Wyoming Geological Museum. Both museums are home to unique artifacts and displays. The university offers more than 100 programs for all types of students. U.S. News and World Report rank the UW programs in engineering, law, and education among the world’s best. The university also operates an Outreach School that uses teleconferencing and other special programs to help students attend UW. That programs and others helped enrollment at UW reach more than 12,000 students.

Most of the students accepted by UW completed the high school success curriculum in high school, which includes two years of a foreign language. Many of the university’s graduate and doctoral programs require that incoming students have a GPA of 3.0 or higher too. They will need to apply to the UW graduate school and the individual programs that interest them and then provide their official transcripts. Those programs can have additional application requirements, including some type of academic or professional writing sample and letters of recommendation. Students need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree to begin any of these programs and may also need to submit a GRE score and/or go through an interview too.
